The term was developed during World War II, to distinguish it from the escort carrier and other less capable types. Venner F. Milewski, Jr. is a retired U.S. Navy, Surface Warfare qualified, Chief Fire controlman with a 32-year career, specializing in the Tartar Missile System, Aegis SPY-1 Radar and the AEGIS Weapons System. He has also worked over 12 years in the shipbuilding industry.
